The announcement was made at a press conference at the Viking Ship Museum on 2 September 2015. “We have waited a long time for this; it is a milestone in the museum’s history,” said Håkon Glørstad, Director of the Museum of Cultural History. “Now we hope to keep this process moving quickly and efficiently. We look forward to opening a world-class facility at Bygdøy.”
“Norway without Viking ships is like Egypt without pyramids. We are pleased that our ships will be displayed in the best possible way,” said Ole Petter Ottersen, President of the University of Oslo.
The Ministry of Education and Research published a press release about the competition. Statsbygg released the terms of the competition on their website. (In Norwegian only. The English program will be translated at a later date.)
The deadline to submit proposals is 1 December 2015. The jury will then evaluate the proposals and announce the winner in March 2016.
