I have leave from my position as Senior conservator or paintings and polychrome sculpture at the Museum of Cultural History (MCH) with a PhD completion grant until September 2018.

My work involves preventive conservation, examination and active treatment of painted wood and canvas. This involves facilitating optimal security and controlled climatic conditions during storage, on loan and in exhibitions. Perform research-based preservation and restoration of the objects, as well as the dissemination of the knowledge about these.

Interests

  • Medieval painting technique and history of technology:
Analysis and interpretation of the materials that make up the Middle Ages painted sculpture and panel paintings contribute to the understanding of their construction and visual effects. The results can challenge theories about what they originally looked like and about their painterly effects. The results can also contribute new understanding about their dating and provenance.
  • Percption of the medieval painterly expression:
What the medieval materiality and painterly expression could signal to the believer, and on three-dimensional polychrome especially.
  • Reconstruction of polychrome panel painting:
We contribute research based knowledge to physical reconstructions of medieval polychrome and paintings, using the tools and materials that was available to the medieval painter.

Background

  • 1998– Senior conservator or paintings and polychrome sculpture at the Museum of Cultural History (MCH).
  • 2017-18: PhD completion grant.
  • 2014-17: PhD fellow at IFIKK, UiO: Evoking the Divine: The Visual Vocabulary of Sacred Polychrome Wooden Sculpture in Norway between 1100 and 1350. The central theme was the search for a visual vocabulary embedded in the polychrome expression of sculpture in Norway. It approaches the perception of the objects through the ‘medieval mind’s eye’ in its wider original context. The research is based in the contemporary classification systems of colour, perceiving colour by their inherent darkness and brightness. Focus is the visual perception of matter and form in the earthly world, its role in a Christian perspective, and how this is communicated in the physical polychrome object as a path to spiritual revelation. This research is grounded in examination of period texts of a proto scientific and theological-philosophical nature, which is compared against analysis and physical observation of the original objects.
  • 1997-98: Temporary position as paintings conservator at the National gallery, Oslo.
  • 1997: Project worker, conservation department, Norsk institutt for kulturminneforskning (NIKU).
