Research at the Museum of Cultural history

Research is one of the main tasks of the Museum of Cultural History.
Research projects, often related to the museum’s collections, deal
with both national and international topics, and concern the present
as well as the past. Research is mainly carried out by the staff of the
three collection departments, the Department of Archaeology,
Department of Cultural Heritage and Department of Ethnography.
The museum also has professionals in non-academic positions who
do their own projects and publish scientific papers.
The Museum of Cultural History has many subject areas which are
covered by only one or two experts. There are, however, a wide range
of specialists in the main disciplines, such as archaeology and social
anthropology. Topics of research are generally based on the individual
interests. The most prominent research projects are often interdisciplinary
and externally financed.
In addition to traditional conservation work, the Department of Conservation
takes part interdisciplinary and technological research and develops new
methods related to the care and treatment of objects in the museum.
