Structure and History

Social Stability and Change in the Stone Age of Eastern Norway - New focus on the Processes of Neolithisation, 6300-3300 BC, and Internationalisation, 2400-1600 BC.

The Museum of Cultural Heritage, University of Oslo, started in spring 2005 a research project on the Stone Age of Eastern Norway. The museum is collaborating with Institute of Archaeology, Conservation and Historical studies to strengthen and vitalise the Stone Age research at the University of Oslo. The project shall be an arena for research at both institutions, stimulating international collaboration and network building.

A starting point for this project is the material from the Svinesund excavation project. The Museum of Cultural Heritage has, since spring 2001, undertaken extensive archaeological excavations at Svinesund, in the municipality of Halden, Østfold. The Svinesund project was initiated in connection with the new E6 motorway extension. The excavations were the result of measures under the Cultural Heritage Act, where the instigator, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, financed the excavations. The budget was NOK 32 millions. Information about the Svinesund project can be found at Project Svinesund (in Norwegian).
