Announcement: New Periodical

Futhark: International Journal of Runic Studies

A new annual scholarly periodical, Futhark: International Journal of Runic Studies, is in the planning stages. Publication will commence in 2010.

The key scholars behind this initiative are:

  • Editors: James E. Knirk (University of Oslo), Henrik Williams (Uppsala University).
  • Editorial advisory board: Michael P. Barnes (University College London), Klaus Düwel (University of Göttingen), Lena Peterson (Uppsala University), Marie Stoklund (National Museum, Copenhagen).

Futhark: International Journal of Runic Studies will encompass some 200 pages per issue. Articles (made anonymous) will be peer-reviewed by at least two external referees of good academic standing. In addition, the editors and advisory board will ensure strict quality control of all the material. Futhark will have these sections:

  • Articles: Scholarly articles, mainly in English, German or Scandinavian languages. All articles will have an English abstract, and those in other languages will have an English summary. Doctoral disputations (opposition and defense) will also be published here.
  • Notices: Short notices with minor observations, usually in English. This section will also contain debate material.
  • Reviews: Longer reviews of major runological publications.

The periodical is an independent publication but will have as its base of operations the Runic Archives at the Museum of Cultural History, University of Oslo, and the Department of Scandinavian Languages, Uppsala University. The journal will be a digital publication, with facility for print-on-demand.

NOTA BENE (RUNOLOGISTS): A style sheet for articles will in time be available under guidelines for authors on the homepage for Futhark: International Journal of Runic Studies (i.e., http://www.futhark-journal.com/authors/). Please submit articles by the submission deadline announced there.
