Invitation to the Seventh International Symposium on Runes and Runic Inscriptions: "Runes in Context"

All runologists and other scholars interested in runology are cordially invited to attend the Seventh International Symposium on Runes and Runic Inscriptions in Oslo 9-14/16 August 2010. The meetings will take place at the old university buildings in the centre of Oslo, close to the Historical Museum which houses the Runic Archives.

The theme of the conference is "Runes in Context", and eight plenary speakers have agreed to speak on various topics related to this theme. The preliminary programme provides room for some forty additional papers plus possibility for poster presentations. The organisers hope that most of the papers will pursue the prescribed theme.

The programme will begin with a formal opening ceremony at 9 AM on Tuesday 10 August and conclude with a banquet on Friday evening 13 August. There will be several local excursions during the symposium to runic inscriptions in various museums in Oslo. An optional post-symposium excursion will be arranged to Valdres and Borgund stave church Saturday and Sunday 14-15 August. All participants are encouraged to take part in the post-symposium excursion.

We are applying to several sources for financial support for the conference and we hope to be able to subvent a reasonable part of the cost for participants. At present, participants must cover their own travel expenses, housing, and dinners. Hotels in Oslo are relatively expensive, but the University of Oslo has an excellent reduced-price agreement with a hotel located only a five-minute walk from the old university buildings. The cost of the excursion will be mainly hotel room and meals.

The symposium registration fee will be kept as low as possible. At present the tentative figure is NOK 1000 (which includes the banquet), with a reduced price for students of NOK 800 (including banquet). Late registration, after 1 June 2010, will incur a financial penalty.
