Invitation to Museum conference August 25–26, 2009
Reality versus virtuality
The museum between tradition and transformation
The Museum of Cultural history is pleased to invite colleagues, scholars and students to a museum conference in Oslo. The conference will be addressing questions concerning the relationship between the physical objects in the museum and our new virtual reality.
Call for papers:
We seek contributions exploring the role of the museums and exhibitions in a world where everything is possible, where everything can be recreated in virtuality on your laptop, on your mobile phone, or in the exhibition room.
• Is the strain and toil of travelling to the museums and walking the galleries worthwhile, when anyone effortlessly can access museum databases, and even see and manipulate our objects in 3D from the comfort of their own homes?
• Are the objects then perhaps better off resting safely in climate controlled storage rooms? Or is this exactly the time when we to the contrary should focus even more on the objects – on materiality and presence?
• Can digital media and special effects enhance the museum experience, or are they just distracting elements?
• Can the large cultural historical museums, with traditions back to the Enlightenment and closely associated with trends of the modern era survive in a post-modern world without adjusting to new technologies and public expectations? What form and to what extent should potential changes take?
Contributions should reflect the themes above, preferably with a focus on ethnographical, archaeological or culture historical key issues. We also welcome contributions with specific focus on modern digital media and technology relating to museums and exhibitions.
In addition to our invited guests, anybody is welcome to deliver a short paper or comment (10-15 min).
Registration with paper by April 15.
General registration by June 15.
Prices for students 300 nok
Others 1000 nok
Welcome and the best regards from the Museum of Cultural History.
