Faglige interesser

Jeg ble med i Saving Osebergs forskergruppe i august 2017, etter å ha vært med i prosjektets referansegruppe tidligere.

Jeg er en makromolekylær biokjemiker og har vært direktør for det britiske nasjonalt senter for makromolekylær hydrodynamikk ved University of Nottingham. Mye av arbeidet mitt har vært fokusert på utvikling av hydrodynamiske metoder for å gi informasjon om størrelser, former og samspill mellom biologiske makromolekyler "store molekyler" i miljøet der de fleste forekommer naturlig – et vandig miljø.

Jeg har særlig interesse for sukkerbaserte polymerer, og disse er spesielt relevante for Saving Oseberg-prosjektet. Bevaring av de vakre Oseberg vikingskipsartefaktene gir et problem i makromolekylær/polymervitenskap, og jeg håper at ekspertisen min kan være nyttig.

Bakgrunn

Jeg er fra Wirral, en liten halvøy nær Liverpool, et område med sterke forbindelser med Norge gjennom vikingene. Jeg ble uteksaminert med en bachelor i fysikk og molekylærbiofysikk fra Oxford i 1976 og fikk en MA i 1980 og en DSc derfra i 2002. I 2011 ble jeg sterkt beæret med å motta pris fra kong Harald på det kongelige slott i Oslo.
