Archaeology along a new Railway

Many Stone Age settlements will be investigated when a new railway is built between Larvik and Porsgrunn in Norway. Due to land upheaval these sites now are situated 25 to 100 meters above the sea. This is one of the few plases where shoresites like this is still on dry land, in most part of the World they are now deep below the surface. The challenges in focus for the investigations are the origin of territories and introduction of agriculture. The unbroken sequence of sites from back to 12 000 years ago gives unique possibilities. Origin of steady group-territory and borders is supposed to be a respons to ecological changes and population growth after last Ice Age. The origin of agriculture did take place in Middle East at the same time, but the spread was slowly through Europe and did not reached Scandinavia until 6000 years ago.

These rescue excavations along the 25 km railway are carried out by the Cultural history museum at University of Oslo, in 2010 - 2012.
