For the majority of people in Mali and Senegal, their dreams of consumption and the good life do not correspond to what they can afford. Poverty does not mean that people do not consume, though, but it affects how and what they consume and, naturally enough, how much. When we go to the marketplaces we see not only that the tight economic situation affects the range of commodities, but also that producers and retailers exercise great creativity in their attempts to satisfy people's dreams.
