St. James
James the Apostle was the patron saint of medieval pilgrims. According to tradition, James received his staff from Christ himself. St. James is almost always depicted with a wide-brimmed hat and a scallop shell - his pilgrim’s badge.

St. James from the altar piece from Onsøy, Østfold, c 1520.
