We are well underway with the Gjellestad excavation, and we have started by systematically removing the top soil above the ship in a square meter grid. The top soil is placed piles on nonwoven cloth, which is marked with the with the grid number, to ensure we know where the piles are from.

Today, Minister of Climate and Environment Sveinung Rotevatn broke ground on the excavation of the Gjellestad ship. The remains of this Viking ship were found in 2018 on the farm Jellestad near Halden, and is one of the most remarkable archeological finds in Norway in after the second world war.

A Viking ship is to be excavated in Norway, for the first time in over one hundred years. The Gjellestad ship will be able to provide completely new knowledge about the Viking Age – thanks to modern technology and new archaeological methods.

The archaeologists can now safely say that the ship is from the Viking Age, and they have also circled in the area the ship was built. But there are still many secrets left to uncover…
