Moving ships and artefacts to the new building

Museum staff involved in conservation and collection management will collaborate with Statsbygg on a separate project designed to ensure the safe handling of the ships and artefacts during the construction process and the move to the new building.

A report prepared for the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research by the international committee of experts states the following:

The Viking Ship Assamblage is recognised as unique and valued both in a Norwegian and international context. A new museum complex at Bygdøy will improve long term preservation of the Viking Ship Assemblage

The collections will be well taken care of by experienced staff. The planning of the whole project includes time slots allocated to the actual move

  • 2019: The ships will be placed on a vibration-proof transportation rig
  • 2019-2020: Moving and safe handling of artefacts from fourth wing
  • 2022: Moving ships and artefacts to the new building.
