Research interests
My research has primarily focused on the use of coins in the Viking Age, as can be seen in my dissertation Suspended Value: Using Coins as Pendants in Viking-Age Scandinavia (c. AD 800–1140). In this dissertation, I examine coins as archaeological objects and attempt to get closer to the people who used them.
I have also worked on more traditional numismatic studies, in which coin types and hoard contents are central. My publications address, among other things, Islamic, English, and Byzantine coins. I seek to build bridges between these traditional numismatic studies and more interpretative approaches that emphasize past economies and mentalities.
Through my work as collection curator, I have also developed several interests that I would like to research further, including medieval coins, tokens, coin-like objects, and collection history.
