Slag and hammerscales

Large amounts of slag melted out into the forge during the heating of the iron blooms to be refined. Most of the slag seeped out during the first few heats. Occasionally so much liquid slag entered the forge that it came gushing out of the tuyère. We had to clean up the forge multiple times each day. The larger pieces of slag accumulated in the forge was retained and weighed. From 8,5 kg of bloom iron more than 1,6 kg of slag melted out.

The last two pictures show examples of hammerscales from forging the bloom on the anvil.
