I am currently a part of the CULTcrime research network, as a postdoctoral research fellow. The overarching aim of my current project, Detecting Cultural Heritage (DETECT)is to investigate the reciprocal relationship between ‘objects’ and ‘heritage’ as theoretical concepts over time.

This will be done by studying why and how certain objects are included in the Norwegian archaeological collections, while others are not. A particular emphasis will be put on objects that are (re-)discovered during archaeological projects and by private finders, such as metal detectorists.

I submitted and defended my PhD thesis in 2021. In it, I asked the question: What’s the deal with old things? A topic that has been, and continues to be, a primary motivating topic of investigation.

My thesis was an exploratory study of attitudes and practices towards certain old things among archaeologists and metal detectorists in Norway. I used a set of complementary (mixed) methods, including archival searches of the National Library’s digitized archives, qualitative interviews of hobby metal detectorists and archaeologists, and spatial and statistical analyses of the detecting finds. The 230 pages cover hobby metal detecting in Norway, and its manifaceted interactions with the Norwegian archaeological heritage management, from the (visible) beginning of the hobby and throughout 2020.
