Children in Roman Period Egypt

In this lecture Doctoral Research Fellow Maiken Mosleth King will present findings from her PhD thesis Social Identity as Constructed and Expressed on Funerary Stelae from Terenouthis, which focuses on the Roman-period funerary stelae from Terenouthis in the western Nile Delta.

An artifact from the Roman-period. To the left a portrait of a woman.

This community was multilingual and multicultural, with Egyptian and Graeco-Roman traditions flourishing side by side. The stelae employ a hybrid Greek-Egyptian artistic style, with primarily Greek epigraphy.

Mosleth King will discuss the commemoration of children in Terenouthis, the types of iconography used to depict children, the differences in the iconography of male and female children, and what these objects can tell us about the conceptualisation of childhood in Terenouthis during the Roman period.
