Funeral stela from the ancient Egypt

Portrait of a woman. The Museum of Cultural History is happy to present MA Karin Emma Karlsen from the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages, University of Oslo, at the museum's Annual Symposium of Egyptology 2024.

Funerary stelas served as a vital means for the ancient Egyptians to honour and depict their deceased ancestors. Karlsen base her analysis of death and power on a stela in the Museum of Cultural History´s collection.

She explores the various forms of power embodied in this artifact based on the theory that the stela was produced during the Second Intermediate Period, and will examine the potential status of the individual depicted on the stela at the time it was created, as well as the reflection of royal authority through the use of the offering formula.
