Beyond the visible: Drone Remote Sensing in Archaeology

Dr. Jitte Waagen will discuss recent developments in the archaeological application of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), focusing on LiDAR, multispectral, and thermal remote-sensing technologies.

Drawing on case studies from the Netherlands and a range of sites within and beyond Europe, the lecture demonstrates how sensors operating beyond the visible spectrum can expand archaeological observation and interpretation.

Topics include the detection of Hellenistic mud-brick architecture through thermal survey, the use of LiDAR to investigate archaeological landscapes beneath dense forest cover, and the broader contribution of multi-sensor UAV survey to excavation and landscape research.

Dr. Jitte Waagen is a Digital Archaeologist at the Amsterdam Centre of Ancient Studies and Archaeology and Coordinator of the 4D Research Lab (4DRL), University of Amsterdam.
