Orning has been instrumental in several projects related to medieval numismatics, for example the exhibition Mirror Kingdoms: Poland–Norway c.1000–1300 at the Historical museum, which is part of the Museum of Cultural History, University if Oslo.
He is also co-supervisor for Mika Boros' PhD project Monetisation at the frontiers of medieval Europe at the Museum of Cultural History and as co-author of the recent book En reise til Roma i sporene til pilegrimen Nikolas Bergsson året 1152 (Dreyer 2024).
