For katolikker starter påsken 1.påskedag.

Show summary
The search for potential meaning embedded in the medieval visual expression involves the precise
description of colour and materials identified through analyses, but also moves beyond this: placing the
objects within the context of the intellectual religious thinking of the period. The experience invoked by
these polychrome sculptures, relate to the human perception of the medieval Christian cosmos. The Book
of Genesis presents light as the act from which all else comes into being with Gods first command, fiat
lux. Consequently, light is the fundamental revelation of rationality in the universe, and of the nature of
God. Its interaction with matter was therefore central to the perception of the material world as a
reflection of its creator. This research has examined how mental images created in text are made present
in the medieval work of art by navigating between the empirical and the conceptual, through the
examination of relevant proto-scientific and theological-philosophical texts, Old Norse and medieval
literature.

Mechanisms of Sacred Communication: Twelve Century Polychrome at the Northernmost Edge of Europe.
Show summary
In Norway, a varied group of medieval wooden sculptures remain from the twelfth century, many with original polychrome preserved. An overview of the artefacts, the painter’s palette, trends in materials used in their construction and the resulting painterly effects will be presented.
Recent research has concluded that these polychrome objects can be read through a visual vocabulary that is part of an intentional and deliberate strategy to evoke divine splendour in the mind of the beholder. The holy is communicated by powerful visual associations with metaphysical divine light and the context of matter in the medieval cosmos. The mental imagery created in contemporary texts is reflected in the visual language communicated by the polychrome sculpture, where the interaction of light with the materials, the representation of light and other associative powers are essential factors.
It is clear from the evidence examined that both the making and the perception of church art in catholic medieval Norway was firmly rooted in an established culture based on the tradition of the old church fathers, in line with Christian paradigms found in the rest of medieval Europe. These results are therefore relevant to the wider European context.

Resultater fra teknologiske undersøkelser vil publiseres her.

A perspective on medieval perception of Norwegian church art.
Show summary
This talk will focus on the use of imitation in Norwegian religious items of worship from the medieval period – with special attention to polychrome objects from the thirteenth century. Though the word “imitation” might suggest inferiority to our modern minds, these works of art served as key objects in church interiors. Their appearance had the ability to elicit admiration and awe.
I will consider the attitudes towards display of such objects at the time they were installed within the church, which should be seen in relation to the objects that were actually produced in Norway at the time. I will also discuss how some paint effects may even have overcome the technical limitations of goldsmithing. What contributes to making an imitation successful? What factors contribute to the intended illusion? A discussion of these questions is set against the background of why the creation of such illusions is difficult to understand in the modern world.

Misvisende.

Show summary
The crucifix from Haug, its conservation history and the background for
the misinterpretation of medieval paint as based on egg-tempera,
belying the characteristic oil paint appearance is discussed. Combined
with the lack of understanding for painterly effects on sculpture, this
led to the use of conventional paint stripper for the removal of
secondary oil-based paint in the 1930's. This treatment, and the
consequences for the sculpture, are situated in the context of the
overall development of conservation and art history. The work presented
was part of the author's painting-conservator diploma, carried out at
