The Swedish linguist Jacob Jonas Björnståhl spent three years in Istanbul during the late 1700s. His writings constitute a starting point for Nordic academic interest in Islam, with a focus on religious practices. Björnståhl depicts the Muslim world by means of comparisons, metaphors, and analogies in ways that point to the development of contemporary disciplines such as the study of religion, ethnography, and linguistics. The lecture is held by Professor Catharina Raudvere.
