Throughout the ninth and early tenth centuries, itinerant viking hosts managed to establish numerous encampment sites as part of their ongoing expeditions across Atlantic Europe. Despite having been extensively investigated for their physical and practical attributes, much less consideration has been given to their status as social and mental constructs, embedded within such tangible settings. As a result, decidedly little is known about what these places would have meant to the people occupying them; to what degree they would have instilled an individual or collective 'sense of place'; and how these factors, in turn, may have contributed to the development and maintenance of group identities and relationships. As such, in lieu of investigating these camps solely for their material qualities, this work will consider their role as socially constructed places. Drawing on established sociological approaches and perspectives, it will emphasize how these sites – even when situated in deeply inhospitable environments – served as safe havens, communities and homes, and as such would have been integral to the success and sustainability of a viking way of life.
